Caught doing good - "Recently a dozen LC juniors were hanging out at the Earl Bowl Lanes on a Saturday night.  After about two hours they were getting ready to leave when the manager of the bowling alley approached them and said he wanted to buy them all a soda because they were so well behaved.  He told them when there is a group of kids getting together in similar circumstances, there is usually bad language and rowdiness.  Their good behavior should make them proud as well as their families!" - Parent of LC junior in an email.

Congratulations to our softball team who last week beat Franklin Towne Charter 15-0 for the District 12 Class AAA Championship!  They lost to Donegal in first round play in the PIAA Championships, but had a great year!   Also at the end of May, Mr. Slabek's 3rd period Theology Class, with the social justice principle of "respect for family and solidarity", hosted an appreciation luncheon for several families of our international students. Mrs. Mary Lou Graham joined with our CSC officers at the Commissioning Mass at the Cathedral.
Our Community Service Corps, moderator Mrs. Mary Lou Graham, was honored recently by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia with an award for Outstanding Special Event.   Last October, students joined walkers from the region at the Art Museum to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research.  LC's team, named McGovern's Marchers, in memory of our teacher, Mr. Joe McGovern who passed away last summer, had two bus loads of students and faculty and raised the most money from any high school!
Chris Foering '11 and Ewa Protasiuk '11, both from Corpus Christi Parish, will be attending the University of Notre Dame's Summer Scholars Program.  Chris will also be attending a summer program at Georgetown University and Ewa will be attending a summer program at Indiana University of PA.  These programs are generously funded by the Connelly Foundation.    Our Student Government team for next year has been elected:  Sarah Rademaker (St. Helena) Publicity; Tori Gawel (Corpus Christi) Secretary; Wes Friel (St. Stanislaus) Vice President; Haleigh Hildebrand (Epiphany of Our Lord) President; Jonathan Rice (St. Maria Goretti) Treasurer. Katherine Beck '13 (St. Stanislaus) and Kristen Adams '13 (St. Eleanor) were part of a group of 17 freshman girls from across the Delaware Valley who were honored for their community service.  Standing with them is Aditi Roy, a member of the news staff of WCAU who spoke at the ceremony held by the Emergency Aid Awards presentation.
Once again, twenty students joined Community Service Corps moderators, Mr. Gene Murphy and Mrs. Mary Lou Graham at the annual Hand in Hand Carnival held on the campus of St. Joseph's University. They interacted with those members in the community with special needs.  Also joining them were many LC alumni, now studying at SJU

Earth Day - LC students spent their free time after school cleaning up our campus.  Joining the Science department faculty members were 82 students who participated in the project. 

LC also recycles year round with our Abitibi paper recycling program.  Every day selected students pick up our recycle paper bins and deposit in the green and gold dumpster.  Feel free to deposit your newspapers and junk mail into this bin.  LC receives a donation for each pick-up.  Last month we saved 6.55 cubic yards in landfill space!
Our annual Wellness Fair was held recently in the gym.    Representatives from Gwynedd-Mercy College, NovaCare, the American Red Cross and others, spoke with students during their lunch periods. The fair was organized by LC faculty member, Mrs. Pat Keenan Bruce '64 and our school nurses, Mrs. Allison Morse and Mrs. Trish Clark.  
The LC Class of 2011 was honored to have Bishop Timothy Senior, Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and a graduate of the Class of 1977, to concelebrate their Ring Mass with our School Minister, Rev. John Schiele '85 at St. Rose of Lima Church.   For more photos from the Mass, click here. Bishop Senior will also preside at our Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2010 in June at The Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown.
Mrs. Jean Broden, Fine Arts Department Chair, joins her students at the Archdiocesan Student Art Exhibition reception held recently.    Their art will be on display until April 8 at the LaSalle University Art Museum located in the Lower Level of Olney Hall. Those whose works are on display include; Sophia Yoon '10 (3rd place winner), Christy Cardillo '10 (MMR), Katelyn Donohue '11 (St. John the Baptist), Sarah Rademaker '11 (St. Helena), Shane Conwell '10 (St. Mary), Alexandra Cech '11 (MMR) and Tim Gillin '11 (St. Stanislaus).
Pat Augustine '10 (St. Mary Parish) recently competed in the PIAA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University and swam 56.86 in the 100 yd breaststroke, beating the state record and received a silver medal.  He also placed in the butterfly event. Congratulations to the LC Swim Team who won the PIAA District 12 AA Championship!  This is the second year in a row they have won.  Members included: Tony Mack '11, Brian Matylewicz '11, Tim Gillen '11, Steve Douglas '11, Alex Marshall '11, Tim McCann '10, Kevin McGuriman '10, Pat Augustine '10 and Nick Augustine '12.
Jason Halberstadt '10, (St. Maria Goretti Parish) shown with his parents, was recently honored at the National Constitution Center as a recipient of the 4th Annual Philadelphia Inquirer Student Citizenship Award.  Our Indoor Track & Field Team ended its most successful season yet.  Kevin Day '10 (St. Jude Parish) 800 meter and Scott Catalano '12 (Corpus Christi Parish) 60 meter dash, competed at the PA Indoor Championships participated in the Nike Indoor National Championships in Boston.  At the recent PCL Championships, Will Schoener '11 (Corpus Christi Parish) took 1st Place in the High Jump, his second year in a row as a first-place finisher and Kevin Day placed first in the 800 meter.

Congratulations to the 7th Grade Math & Science Bowl Winners for Overall Score - St. Stanislaus!  Daniel Godzieba was highest Individual Science Winner. Congratulations to the 7th Grade Math & Science Bowl Winners for Math - St. Jude!  Nicky Maloney was highest Individual Math Winner.
We just finished celebrating World Languages Week with an International Festival in the gym.  Food from around the world, including Japan, Columbia, Italy and Belgium were featured.
Congratulations to Dan Maloney '13 (St. Jude Parish) and Allison Baluarte '13 (St. Catherine of Siena) who finished first and second in our art competition focusing on marketing materials for the incoming Class of 2014.  Our sixth period guitar class stopped for a moment to take a photo for the yearbook. 

 

Thanks to all who performed in the Take A Bow For Haiti Show last month.  LC raised over $1900.00 in donations from the show and collections made through our outreach program, Charity Wednesdays.  Proceeds were sent to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti.  Thank you from Superintendent of Schools, Mary Rochford.

The Inter-County Scholastic Ice Hockey League All-Star game was recently played at Ice Line in West Chester.  The LC team was represented by Monica Trefz '10, Emily Rice '12 (who also scored a goal), Jess Nace '12, Sarah Rademaker '11 and Allison Schaffer '10.
MLK Day of Service 2010 - Over 140 LC students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni got together on the annual Dr. King Day of Service.   More than 500 breakfast bags were made, and in record time!  The food was given to Aid for Friends, who will distribute to the elderly and shut-ins. Special thanks to Community Service Corps moderators, Mrs. Mary Lou Graham and Mr. Gene Murphy for coordinating the project.
The LC Girls Ice Hockey team placed 2nd recently at the 40th Annual Princeton Day School tournament. The Lady Crusaders competed against Princeton Day School, Rye Country Day School and Princeton High School.  They are currently tied for 1st Place in the Inter-County league with a 6-1 record. Allison Schaffer '10 was awarded the Christopher Reeve Sportsmanship award for her outstanding goaltending and terrific display of teamwork and leadership.
As the LC community continues to prepare for the birth of Jesus during this Advent time, we also had the opportunity to venerate the relic of St. John Vianney. 

 

From December 3 - 10, the relic was placed in the Chapel of St. Therese of the Little Flower by our School Minister, Rev. John Schiele '85.  The relic is traveling throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia during this Year of the Priest. 
Thanks to all in the community who came out to the North Wales Barnes & Noble store on Friday, December 4. Our Chorus, lead by Mr. Maresca, sang Christmas carols and hymns for the audience. All purchases that evening and in the week to follow were credited to the LC Music Department.  Thanks very much for all who supported our program.
Before Thanksgiving, the Community Service Corps broke all records in packing and delivering food to Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor.  Over 112 boxes were collected from our homerooms!   More than 75 families of KeystoneCare LLC and Keystone Hospice patients had everything they needed for a Thanksgiving celebration that included canned goods and dried goods, along with turkeys provided by Keystone. Mr. Quinn was joined by faculty member Mrs. Templeton and other administrators, faculty and students in preparing for our own Thanksgiving gathering.  The LC community is grateful for all our families, friends and alumni who helped us during the year with their time, talents and treasures.
In November our fall play, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 was held. Congratulations to our Director, Mrs. Terri Camilari and her drama group, what a wonderful performance! 
Congratulations to Katie Gillespie '11 who is the PIAA District 12 AA Tennis Singles Champion and the Philadelphia Catholic League AA Tennis Singles Champion.     In October, student representatives from our Respect Life Club met with Bishop Robert Maginnis at the Respect Life Leadership Day. 
Congratulations to LC's Cross Country runners;  Kevin Day '10 (St. Jude Parish), Christy Cardillo '10 (MMR Parish), Paige Kozeniewski '11 (St. Mary Parish), Audrey Cunningham '12 (St. Stanislaus Parish) and Kathleen Reid '12 (St. Maria Goretti Parish). They represented LC, The Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 in the PIAA State Championship race. Each runner placed at District 12 Championship.

As part of the this year's Writer's Workshop English elective, the first guest speaker was Mike Sielski.  Mr. Sielski is the sports columnist for Calkins Media and is syndicated in The Bucks County Courier Times, The Intelligencer and The Burlington County Times.    Over the past decade, he has won seven Associate Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards and more than 30 other national and state awards.  His most recent book is "Fading Echoes", which can be found on many bestseller lists, including Amazon.com. During his talk and book signing, he met with students and LC faculty members, Mrs. Eileen Fertig Hildenbrand '63 and Ms. Gina Ventresca
On a recent Sunday, the LC Cheerleaders and parent volunteers participated in cleaning up the upper and lower gardens at the historic Morgan Log House.  They were praised for their efforts in making the past become more realistic to visitors. At Citizen's Bank Park recently, the LC Dance Company volunteered at Walk NOW for Autism.  They handed out water and cheered walkers on as they approached the finish line.  The dancers have participated in this walk for the past five years. 
Student Government Officers for 2009-2010; Alex Kirk (MMR Parish) Secretary, Shawna Morse (Corpus Christi Parish) President, Jim Moser (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish) Treasurer and Sam Kraynak (Corpus Christi) Vice President, attended Camp Neidig Leadership Camp, sponsored by The Rotary Club, this past June.  Also in attendance but not in photo was Gen Wagner '10 (St Maria Goretti Parish).  Jim and Sam were 2 out of 8 chosen out of 180 campers nominated for Camper of the Year.  The camp's objective is to offer outstanding high school students an opportunity to live, work, and play together in an atmosphere of cooperation and team building which will offer a challenge to accept the responsibilities of leadership.
Pat O'Hara '10 (St. Maria Goretti Parish), was recently featured in The Catholic Standard & Times.  He is the son of Tricia and Pat O'Hara '70 and has a sister, Casey in the Class of 2013.  You may read more about it at this link: LC Senior preps for final year in 3 sports. David Keeler '10 (St. Agnes Parish) was honored by Grand View Hospital for 300 hours of volunteer service.  He received the Service Excellence Award pin by GVH's Manager of Volunteer Services, Caroll Clymer.  David has volunteered at GV since he was 14.  Since January 2009, he has volunteered two days a week after school in the GV Sports Medicine Department.
