Student Achievements - as of October 03, 2008

Members of the LC football team and Coach Jim Algeo continued their tradition of participating in annual Patriot Games Triathlon, held at Peace Valley Park on September 13th, in memory of Noell Maerz '90 Joining them this year were over 25 members of the Community Service Corps. Proceeds benefited the Make a Wish Foundation and an LC Scholarship.
In July, Amanda Curry '11 (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish) sang the National Anthem before games at the Trenton Thunder and the Wilmington Blue Rocks.    In August, our students returned from Sydney, Australia, where they celebrated World Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI. 

Anthony Iacono ’09 (Corpus Christi Parish) received the high honor of being accepted into a Pennsylvania Governor’s School of Excellence this summer.  Each year, thousands of students compete for selection to one of the eight offered schools, which are five-week long, full-scholarship, residential programs on college campuses.  Acceptance is based entirely on the merit of the student’s academic performance and achievements.  

Anthony was one of only 50 students selected from across the state to attend the PA Governor’s School for Information, Society and Technology held at Drexel University, where he learned about computers and their functions along with programming, databases, system administration, and languages like PHP, java, python, and HTML.  He also completed a project where he designed and programmed an interactive math learning game using Gamemaker Language (GML). 
Jessica Saba '09 (Corpus Christi Parish) was accepted to the Summer Scholars Program at the University of Notre Dame and was awarded a full academic scholarship from the Connelly Foundation to participate in this program, held from June 22 to July 5.  Her concentration of study was in the School of Psychology.  Two hundred students from across the country participated.  She will also be traveling to Europe this summer with her classmates from Mr. Skinner's Social Studies Department.
Chrissy Skrzat '09 (Corpus Christi Parish) is taking a three credit course offered by the University of Dallas called "Shakespeare in Italy".  She has already started the online component of the program and will spend two weeks in Italy from July 21 to August 5.  While there, she will be based at UD's campus just outside Rome, and will travel into the city almost daily to see sites including:  the Forum, the Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica.  In addition, she will also be traveling to other cities throughout the country; Venice, Bologna and Padua.

Brian Keane '09 was selected to be a People to People U.S. Student Ambassador.  In preparation for his 3-week Ambassador Trip, Brian spent 15 classroom hours learning local customs and expectations of a Student Ambassador.  While on his trip, Brian had many exciting opportunities including: Meeting with dignitaries from Parliament; Overnight stay with a local family to explore local culture and customs; Interacting with other students and local leaders; Seeing many sites from behind the scenes such as Buckingham Palace, Warwick Castle, Stonehenge, Tower of London, Oxford, Normandy, Mont St. Michel Castle, Eiffel Tower, Chateau de Versailles, Musee du Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and much more.  He also trained with experts at the UK Sailing Academy  It was an experience of a lifetime!

At the end of June, St. Stanislaus and St. Jude parishes took 36 teens to Lexington, KY for Catholic Heart Work Camp.  The following LC students are in the photo: Josh Mitchell '11, Matthew Nitchke '09, Maggie Tierney '09, Brigid McMonagle '11, James Pinder '11, Brendan Pinder '12 and Marguerite Nocchi '09.
Ben Pepe '11 working at the day care center during the Catholic Heart Work Camp in Lexington, KY.  Our current students as well as alumni worked in food pantries, homes of senior citizens, subsidized city day camp programs, a crisis center for pregnant teens, and habitat for humanity homes.  Patrick Dietrich '10 doing some carpentry work.  It was awe inspiring to see their dedication and love for God while serving others.  Each teen had to raise $500 to attend the trip.  The following LC students and alumni also attended: Daniel Miller '10, Robert Nuss '09, Nathan Pepe '09, Molly Hillman '08 and Erin Witowski '08.
Jeff Smith '09 (St. Joseph's Parish, Warrington) with his family and Ali Schoener '08 (Corpus Christi Parish) at the MPulse Ann Arbor which provided an opportunity for approximately 200 young musicians and performing artists to gain exposure to the rigorous training provided by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Designed for students who are considering studying these areas in college, the program gives students the opportunity to work with distinguished University of Michigan faculty and alumni while experiencing campus life in Ann Arbor.
Melissa Alpuche '09 (St. Anthony's Parish) sang the National Anthem before the May 31 Reading Phillies Game.  In addition, Amanda Curry '11 (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish) sang at the Opening Game in April!
